A scholar prayed, “Lord, give me the courage and strength to change what can be changed and then the patience to accept things I cannot change, and the wisdom to differentiate the two” (paraphrased).
I have been there several times, more than one hundred times at least, begging for something in vain, working hard and endlessly only to fail, trying all you can only not to be appreciated, yes, fighting a war that was not meant to be fought in the first place.
I won’t forget that Saturday morning when I called every closer friend begging for money, begging for top up on my school fees. I had withdrawn from my account all I had, but little money was still missing. I called everyone; even those I do not like calling for help, those who I knew would later laugh at my inadequacy, and those who I was not sure of our friendship. Yes, some gave me the money, others did not have, and of course others did not trust me at all. I moved up and down, visited the places for help, and some did help me and others pushed me away. I did not want to lose the exams, to spoil all my months of study with just one day; I wanted to do the exams.
God is good; through the hustling I got all the money I wanted, and sadly, when I presented myself that same day for the paper, there was no more chance for me. I had come with the money but the policy was clear: students must present with clearance card only, not even with bank slips. I begged, cried, and beseeched the man in charge, but all in vain.
Oh my God! 10 minutes elapsed while others were writing on their papers, 30 minutes were gone, and an hour was off, and I still hoped for mercy as I lingered around with tears rolling in my eyes. Yes, I lost the fight on the door. I lost the fight that I had given all. I turned away and walked home with Shame, and a regret of all the calls I had made and sleepless night I had had.
If you have ever done everything you could for a woman who later cheated on you, you know what I mean. If you have ever knelt and begged for a job that was still taken away, you understand the pain. If you have ever given a business all you had only for it to fail, you really know the pain. If you have ever approached the people you don’t like for help only to be turned away, you understand the regret.
Yes, there are wars that are not for us to fight in the first place, situations and moments that can be managed well by WAIT & SEE approach. There are institutions, people, situations, and conditions that won’t go away or pardon us because we have given them all we can, and, surprisingly, leaving some of them untouched would be the remedy.
Some conditions won’t be changed. Some people won’t change their attitude because you behave well with them. Some sins are yours forever no matter how much you repent. Some woman is not yours no matter how much you love her, and some people won’t be pleased no matter how much you try. Yes, that is the truth, live with it.
People will tell you to always do your part, which is okay, but, yes, sometimes our part is just to sit and relax, wait and see, leave and let go. Yes, in some situations, that is all we have to do.
Up to now, I am still paying for the mistake I did that morning; for the begging and kneeling I did, the calls I made to friends, the money I borrowed, the time I wasted. But how could I know if did not try? Of course, I could not. And that is why I do not blame you as well.
God does not blame us when we waste our energy, time, resources, and knowledge on things that won’t work out. Yes, no one blames us, but we lose, we lose a great deal. And somebody wrote, “Study from the experiences of others for life is too short to experience it all yourself”. Yes, the exper
iences of others do not completely define our experiences too even with the same situations or challenges, but maybe tell us to make a change in our approach, our weapons or strategy. Yes, you cannot know before you try, but I suffered it for you, you can learn from it.
What is the point today? There are people who won’t be pleased no matter how hard you try. There are people who won’t forgive you even when you beg for mercy. There is a woman or a man who won’t love you no matter how hard you try to make it work. There is a situation that won’t change no matter how hard you give it a short. Yes, there are those institutions that won’t listen to you even when y
. I havou have lost your mom or spouse.
Yes, I know you know what I am saying. There is that boss who won’t forgive your late coming even when your child got sick in the middle of the night. And I ask, what is the use of telling such a Congressman? What do we gain when we kneel on the feet of those who made up their mind to punish us? What do you hope to have when you tell your enemy how terrible your night was? And what do we gain from moving east, west, north and South in search of answers that do not exist? Yes, no gain both in heaven and here on earth.
Way forward; it is hard to tell which one problem needs no trying and which other situation needs the short. And even though I am a good writer and proposer, I have no better ways to help you with this. In the end, it will be your instincts, experiences and God’s directions. The truth is God exists and he talks to us through his various and sometimes miraculous ways, listen to him.
Sometimes we can find peace and satisfaction in accepting things the way they are, yes, in believing that somehow things were meant to be this way, and still hope in the God who does everything for the good of those who trust in Him (Romans 8:28). I have been there and I know the pain, and you can overcome too.
This is a dangerous lesson and may hinder you from trying anything, and so my last advise would be, “Try all you can in all situations, but when nothing changes and you are already at your limit, let go and find other open doors. Yes, all closed doors may not be truly locked up, but it is no longer hard to tell the difference after a little push”. Good luck
If you have not yet received Christ Jesus as your personal Savior to help you in this crazy life and build you up for even the next eternal life, today is your day dear brother and sister. Repeat this prayer after me, “Lord Jesus, I am so much happy to meet you today. I have suffered and struggled to live for myself alone, but I am tired and I have sinned a lot along this way. I kindly ask you to take me in today and make me your holy child. Yes, I want to be there for your service Lord from today onwards. Save me and make me find true living in you alone. Thanks Jesus. Amen”. If you have finished praying, we believe you are now saved and Jesus will never abandon you. Find a good church near you and be part of their congregation.
