Opinion: Baganda are more tolerant and hospitable than most tribes!

Back to tribes, I would instead like to assert that the Baganda are among the most tolerant and hospitable people! Even if a Capital city like Kampala or, ideally, any place in Uganda literally belongs to all Ugandans, I personally can’t pretend to see that Kampala and the neighboring towns generally belong to Baganda and their King. And yet, all tribes have infiltrated these areas to the depth, to the point of ruling over the natives!

The Baganda show tolerance and hospitality in a way that they decide to stay calm, share their land with us, and tolerate our various cultures, some of them so annoying! It is important to note that the Baganda tribe is a strong tribe, blessed with very powerful learned men and women, powerful culture that still shine out in this modern day Uganda, and with vast resources. With this, if they wanted, they could put up a fight or die trying! What I am trying to say is, irrespective of some forms of intolerance here and there, these guys, considering the power they have, they would do worse, fight everyone off! But they are cool!

Now, personally, I am a guy who is not sensitive when it comes to tribes. My friendship is purely based on merit. That is why I married a Muteso. And I find it easy to talk about tribes without necessarily becoming ‘tribalistic’. The point of this post is to encourage more tolerance and assimilation. The purpose is to inform us that whenever signs of intolerance show up, we should respond with reservations, bearing in mind that there is always some good somewhere. And, in general, I wanted to say, the Baganda are some of the good people we have around!

Wait! They are also everywhere now; in Kisoro, my home, in Kabale, in Mbarara, in the North, and everywhere across Uganda. However, the fact is, they aren’t there the same way we are here! We are here in large numbers, and, to some extent, in some form of rulership or leadership in all areas. As I noted earlier, while this is a normal phenomenon considering the fact that Kampala is our capital city and Uganda isn’t a Kingdom anymore but a country, we should never take for granted the little tolerance and hospitality the Baganda and their King accord us.

Therefore, live a life of gratitude and more tolerance. God bless you.
