A scholar wrote, “you have no right to decide on the DONTs if you cannot provide the DOs at the same time”. Yeah, i have been thinking a lot about my past and all the decisions i have ever made and believe me when i say, i regret so much the things i did not do than the things i did. Look around, most of us have been trained from our culture, from our religious backgrounds, and everything around us including our education that we should be careful with our actions, our words, and our thoughts. Yeah, even the bible teaches us that we sin through our actions, words, and our thoughts but the same bible teaches us that we should act, we should speak and think a lot and work a lot. So what happened?
From our histories of wars, of diseases, of relationships and of businesses, there has always been cowards; people who play it safe. For man has been prone to sinning and doing wrong from the genesis to our end, the easiest possible way to avoid risks, mistakes and sins have been avoidance. Okay, let me be clear; a number of ladies and gentlemen out there won’t fall in love for the fear things could go wrong. A group of youths out here are scared of investing in a business for the fear of the possible risks and losses. Yeah, i am seeing most Ugandans are going to default on voting or vote a candidate not of their desire simply because they are scared of the outcomes. Yeah, we fear to sleep so we do not dream, that is how we have been raised.
What am i talking about today? Your sin, i mean our sin, is not because we have acted a lot, spoke a lot, thought a lot or invested a lot, our sin is residing in our inaction. Look around the world, people are so much concerned with sins of comission than omission, we are wondering about what we are doing, instead of wondering what we are not doing. Okay, let us make it easy using this parable of the Jew, Jesus;
The parable of 3 servants (Matthew 25:14-30) is the perfect example here. The servant who got his talent, dug the ground and hid it there thought he played it safe. Yeah, he knew that by not doing anything, he was more safe compared to those who risked. But what happened? Read for yourself, “Those who have much will get more…”. That is the message: We are safe when we are inactive, we are not immune to heartaches and headaches when we avoid falling in love, we do not make it better when we do not invest money, we are not sinless when we talk less, do less or even think less, we become better and safe when we do, when we act, when we love, when we dance, when we trade, when we act and act more.
The other day i chatted with ladies and they expressed how they were scared of falling in love. According to them, men are rumpens just intending to hurt them and exploit them and the best way to play the safe mode is to avoid it altogether. But let me ask, do you belive so deep within your heart? I mean, are you sleeping completely well and desiring nothing? Are you holy by not acting? The truth is that we are sinners because we are so active, we could be sinning by NOT DOING than DOING.
Way foward: The chances are that 10 years from now, you will regret more about the things you had to do but did not, words you had to say and did not say them, people you should have loved or spent time with but did not, or the businesses you should have invested in but did not. And you know what! It hurts so much to regret about what you did not do than what you did. Take time, ask around, consult the adult and old, ask them about their regrets; their worst regrets are the things they missed doing, the people they missed loving and the businesses they missed investing in. And do we really have to be the same???
You talent is here today, there is an opportunity somewhere, someone is longing for you and you are hiding, that is more sinning and the worst one. I want us to think of C.S Lewis’ words, “If you set out to sin, sin a lot”. That is so much of a philosophical sentence calling upon us to set ourselves free and work out everything and hope for the best. Risk investing, risk loving, risk sinning and their you have found the true self. Remember, our desires is our God’s means of talking to us and their fulfillment is His glory. There is no other way to worship God than meeting all your desires in Him, set out and act a lot. God be with you.
