Open letter to cop28

Sign the Open Letter to COP28 Presidency & Join Climate Education Coalition for Climate Literacy!

An open letter demanding the COP28 presidency to prioritize climate education and ask UN member states to formalize and incorporate climate education in their education systems has been worked out and signed by over 100 organizations and individuals united under what they called Climate Education Coalition. The coalition is now asking you to co-sign the open letter with them and push for climate literacy.

Why the open letter for climate education?

While climate education is the foundation upon which informed negotiations and effective climate mitigation and adaptation plans can be laid, available evidence shows that countries haven’t taken it serious.

Climate education is foundation to climate action

Most countries don’t have climate education in their NDCs and those that have a hint of it haven’t formalized it. In fact, most of the climate education is informally provided by private sector, non-profit organizations, and individual climate activists, leaving out a big number of people who would benefit a lot from formalized climate education in schools.

READ: What is Climate Education Coalition?

In our earlier article, we highlighted the need for climate education when we cited data that showed low levels of climate literacy in some African countries, for example, Tunisia and Mozambique. Even developed countries have not prioritized climate education.

In fact, an article at World Economic Forum thinks that developing countries have done better than developed world when it comes to practicing and reporting on climate education. It is against this background that the coalition has seen it urgent to include climate education on priority talks of COP28 UAE.
