Sustainability reporting

SDGs: UMA launches Sustainability reporting, Possible tax exemptions and other benefits for complying companies!

If you thought that business regulation based on SDGs isn’t yet here in Uganda, you better think twice! Last week, I was honored with an invitation and attendance of sustainability reporting (SDGs) launch that was organized and championed by Uganda Manufacturers Association in partnership with the University of Southampton. During the launch, the ministries of Water and Environment and Trade, industries and Cooperatives were big guests and promised alliance and partnership and enforcing SDGs across businesses through policy and funding and, if possible, tax exemptions!

But what is Sustainability Reporting?

It is a yearly report filed by companies, businesses and all organizations showcasing a company’s alignment to sustainable development goals (SDGS). This is possible if, during the company’s usual business, deliberate efforts and decisions are made to serve the three chief themes of sustainability; environment, people or society and economics or business.

According to UMA, the association that is going to spearhead the movement, companies that comply with SDGs shall receive a certificate of recognition from UMA called ‘sustainability reporting mark certification’, be listed on UMA website and be recommended for possible partnerships from overseas and markets. This automatically shall open up more opportunities and growth for the businesses.

SDGs politics and special funding has been around, working through the office of prime minister! But you didn’t know, did you? At Sacred Entrepreneurship, we usher you into sustainability era by offering two services:

I. For those without any business, we enable you start a sustainable business addressing any of SDGs of your choice!
II. For those with businesses, we enable you to incorporate SDGs into your existing strategy

Additionally, we offer you:
i. Certificate
ii. Free listing on our website
iii. SDGs training
iv. Timely updates regarding SDGs developments in Uganda and across the globe
v. Connect you to all our partners and other services of Miklah

Besides the above opportunities, professor Venny of University of Southampton explained that meeting sustainable development goals fulfills a company’s moral purpose, the true feeling of doing business, not the expense of people and planet!

Asked about training program for companies and small businesses on how to incorporate SDGs into daily business so as to earn the certificate, the association seemed not to have a clear plan for that though promises were made regarding some arrangements. Even if these arrangements were possible, according to my observations, small businesses would still be left out. The association is targeting 50 companies in the first one year and then more 50 companies in the next other year, making 100 companies, which, according to the association, is a good number to drive the sustainability politics forward.

My question is: What makes you and your small business not grab this opportunity? Listen, there is going to be special funding, special support, special tax exemptions, special markets and customers for any business that meets sustainability mark, why not embrace the opportunity? Besides, there are hundreds of advantages for any business that incorporates sustainability into its strategy. Actually, we have written a document explaining 17 reasons why you should start or incorporate SDGs into your business!
