The 4th National Health Professionals’ Education, Training, and HealthCare Conference (NHPET & HC) took place at the Source of the Nile Hotel in Jinja City, between 28th and 30th April 2026. Vicent Nemeyimana (Nemvicx), representing his company, MIKLAH Life, and their other employers like Mulago National Referral Hospital and Jeph International University attended and presented a research abstract on the influence of teacher-student relationship on the academic achievement of students.

What was Vicent’s presentation about?

The presentation outlines a research study conducted by Vicent Nemeyimana investigating “The Influence of Teacher-Student Relationship on Students’ Academic Achievement” at the Indian Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (IIHAS) in Kampala (now known as Jeph International University).

Grounded in Social Support Theory, the study hypothesized that positive relationships between instructors and students serve as vital academic social support—functioning through emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal pathways—to significantly enhance learning outcomes.

Using a cross-sectional descriptive design with a randomly selected sample of 150 certificate nursing and midwifery students, the study assessed academic achievements alongside student-perceived relationships. The data showed a high overall level of academic achievement at 90%, while the perceived quality of the teacher-student relationship was rated as moderate at 76%. A key gap identified in the relationships was the need for instructors to better address students’ emotional struggles.

Ultimately, the study concluded with strong statistical evidence (via Chi-square analysis) confirming a direct, positive correlation between favorable teacher-student relationships and superior academic achievement. The presentation concludes that nurturing supportive, mentorship-oriented learning environments and strengthening faculty pedagogical skills are critical components for boosting student motivation, improving clinical confidence, and cultivating a more resilient health workforce in Uganda.

Vicent and paper presentation in conferences is a common thing! Whenever there is an opportunity to share some of the insights he generates from some of his studies, Vicent is always available.

In May 2022, during the Nurses Day Celebrations in Kamuli District, Uganda, Vicent attended and presented a paper on Knowledge, Attitude, and Intentions of Males to Join Nursing Profession. The study was conducted as descriptive, cross-sectional investigations targeting male secondary school students (specifically in Senior 4 and Senior 6 classes) across districts like Kisoro and Wakiso.

Researchers utilized proportionate stratified random sampling and self-administered questionnaires to evaluate the participants’ levels of knowledge, attitudes, and career intentions against standardized evaluation frameworks like Bloom’s cut-off scores. Structuring the research this way allowed investigators to pinpoint exactly where cultural perceptions diverged from reality among young men on the verge of choosing a career path.

The findings revealed a stark contrast between awareness and actual willingness to join the profession. While a significant majority of the students possessed moderate to good knowledge about what nursing entails, deep-rooted gender stereotypes and social perceptions heavily compromised their attitudes. For instance, in the Kisoro cohort, 77% displayed adequate baseline knowledge, yet 47% held a poor attitude—frequently misinterpreting nurses as mere “doctors’ assistants” who lack professional independence.

Consequently, career intentions remained low; even in areas where initial interest seemed high, the vast majority of male students explicitly favored a career in medicine over nursing, or viewed nursing as a temporary stepping stone they intended to leave.

To bridge this gender gap, the studies collectively recommend aggressive public sensitization and targeted career guidance campaigns spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, nursing councils, and academic institutions. Crucially, schools and career counselors need to actively dismantle historical stereotypes by showcasing successful male nursing role models and highlighting the true clinical autonomy, specialization pathways, and modern leadership opportunities within the field.

Engaging parents and community leaders in these sensitization efforts was also highlighted as essential to reshaping the societal prestige of nursing and encouraging more young men to confidently pursue it.

The officials quarrelled, rebuked, and shouted at me for asking! In simple words, they insisted, the policy would work whether we liked it or not, and that I had no authority to question their power and wisdom!
