Opinion: Bafumbira show solidarity when they demand for the pardon of ‘their’ Kale Kayihura!

Yesterday, President Museveni was in Kisoro district looking for votes for the upcoming 2021 general elections. Surprisingly, the leaders of Kisoro presented their one need; PARDON FOR ‘THEIR SON’, KALE KAYIHURA. Kale Kayihura, once a great Museveni guy and IGP of Uganda police fell out with Museveni when he was accused of killing Andrew Kaweesi, an assistant IGP Uganda Police, arming gangs and paramilitary organizations and unlawful repatriation of Rwandanese refugees back to their country. In general, many suspected that Museveni spat him out when he sensed that he was building power for himself, a move that threatened Museveni’s power!

By using the ‘Pardon for Kayihura’ as a bargaining chip, Kisoro people have set the bar highest compared to other tribes and cultures in Uganda. I don’t know why no political analyst has seen this! This is solidarity of the highest level. In our today’s Uganda, it is very rare for citizens to want to go down with some ‘hero’ or high office government officer!

The Bafumbira of Kisoro are sending a message that they are the right people to fight for (even when it means to steal for or murder for or whatever for them!) because when you finally go down, they are ready to fight with you or go down with you! Who wouldn’t want to identify himself with such people?

Of course, you can argue this out by saying that it is because Kale Kayihura’s regime saw most of them get positions in Uganda Police. However, I want to believe that these other ‘historical’ ‘heroes’ have had the people they favored, the ones they ushered into government’s rich soils. How come when they go or went down, their tribes or the people they gave pass didn’t fight along with them? You want names? No, You know them! They are many!

To me, irrespective of all other things, Bafumbira people under their leader Abel Bizimana have done a heroic thing; fighting for their son and risking it all to have him safe and pardoned. Also, note that your son doesn’t have to be right to win over your love. Whether Kale was wrong or right, whatever he was and or did, Bafumbira want him back, safe and sound! This is true solidarity. And for this, I am a proud #MUFUMBIRA!
