The journey of holiness isn’t an easy one! It is a journey of self-denial, dying to self and living for Christ. The Bible calls it, The Narrow Path or the Cross. And yet, when asked what gain one earns by following Christ, Jesus Himself answers; ‘there is a lot to gain, both in this life and the life to come’ (paraphrased).
In this life, just as everyone else, Christians experience good and bad times. However, the Bible confirms, Christians’ faith and hope in Christ provides real joy that is far above everything else. And, John Piper reminds us, God, irrespective of what we go through, actually commands us to delight in Him, to give Him praise and Glory. To delight in God is to find satisfaction, pleasure, joy, fulfillment in God, both now and forever. But the question comes up; how can joy and pain reside together?
How can a suffering Christian find joy and happiness in God? (Mind you, not in heaven alone but even here on earth)
In this book, I try to explore how our suffering and forsaking all earthly pleasures for Christ breeds fulfilling joy in our lives. This is an inspiration and motivation for all of us suffering and carrying our cross for Christ’s sake. It isn’t about the future joy in heaven alone, but also fulfilling joy and satisfaction in this life. And how pain and pleasure come to reside together in us is a mystery worth exploration!
