Building Resilient Self-Esteem for Children With Albinism: A Parent’s Guide!

Having a child or Children With Albinism can be a challenging experience for any parent. However, as a parent, you really have no option but to learn and adapt to the demands of the situation, and support your child as far as you can go. Importantly, children with albinism are 100% capable of anything; they just need a well-built self-esteem, skills and opportunities, and support. And my friend, Vivian, has something to say in relation to building resilient self-esteem for children with albinism.

My friend and a Mandela Washington Fellow, VIVIAN EZEONWUMELU, posted something amazing about how to build self-esteem for children with Albinism. After reading the post, I resonated with it. I then asked her to publish it on Miklah Blog, a request she granted. Below is her brief and very informative article. Thank you:

How to build self-esteem of children with albinism – Vivian

“As a parent or a caregiver of a person with albinism, here is how you can build the self-esteem of children with albinism;

1. Celebrate their uniqueness: Encourage your children with albinism to embrace their unique features and strengths. Teach them that being different is something to be proud of and that their albinism does not define their worth or capabilities.

2. Provide proper education and support: Ensure that your children have access to quality education and resources that cater to their specific needs. Advocate for accommodations such as sitting in the front row or using assistive technology if required.

3. Foster a positive self-image: Help your children develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence. Encourage them to see themselves as capable and deserving of success. Praise their achievements and talents, and remind them of their worth beyond their physical appearance.

People or children with albinism can do anything!

4. Encourage open communication: Create a safe and open environment where your children feel comfortable expressing their feelings, concerns, and experiences related to their albinism. Be there to listen, offer support, and address any challenges they may face due to their condition.

5. Promote inclusivity and diversity: Teach your children about the importance of inclusivity and acceptance of others. Encourage them to embrace diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, and abilities. Help them understand that everyone deserves respect and kindness, regardless of their differences.

6. Connect with support networks: Seek out support groups or organizations that specialize in albinism or rare medical conditions. These networks can provide valuable resources, guidance, and a sense of community for your children and the entire family.

7. Teach self-advocacy skills: Help your children develop the skills to advocate for themselves. Teach them to articulate their needs, ask for accommodations, and stand up for their rights. This will empower them to navigate the world confidently and independently.

They need to know they too can be awesome
They too need to smile & believe in themselves

8. Emphasize personal growth and resilience: Encourage your children to embrace challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth. Teach them to persevere, to learn from their mistakes, and to believe in their ability to overcome obstacles. By fostering a resilient mindset, you can help instill a strong sense of self-esteem that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Remember, every child is unique, including those with albinism. Adapt these suggestions to fit the specific needs and personalities of your children. With love, support, and the cultivation of self-esteem, you can help your children with albinism thrive and reach their full potential.”

They also need to be loved and treated like any other human being because they are human and created in God’s image.
